Oral Hygiene and Health

Your Oral Hygiene and Health Care Plan:

Oral Hygiene and Health touches every aspect of our lives but is often taken for granted. Your mouth is a window into the health of your body. It can show signs of nutritional deficiencies or general infection. Systemic diseases, those that affect the entire body, may first become apparent because of mouth lesions or other oral problems.

Good Oral Hygiene is necessary to keep teeth and gums healthy. It involves habits such as brushing twice a day and having regular dental checkups.

Without treatment, tooth decay or gum problems can lead to pain, problems with self-confidence, and tooth loss. These issues may lead to malnutrition, speech problems, and other challenges in a person’s work, school, or personal life.

At Bloomfield Dental Center, we encourage all our patients to take a very good care of their Oral hygiene for it is very important for their overall health.

You can practice good Oral Hygiene by following some practices that can keep teeth and gums healthy.

The Most Important Tips For Your Oral Hygiene:

Teeth Brushing:

Proper brushing is essential for cleaning teeth and gums effectively. Use a toothbrush with soft, nylon, round-ended bristles that will not scratch and irritate teeth or damage gums.

  • Brush your teeth twice a day.
  • Try to clean the outer surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth.
  • Clean the inner surfaces of your upper teeth, then your lower teeth.
  • Clean the chewing surfaces.
  • Remember to replace your toothbrush every three to four months.

Flossing:

Flossing is an essential part of the tooth-cleaning process because it removes plaque from between teeth and at the gum line, where periodontal disease often begins.

  • Floss once a day.
  • stick to using tools designed for cleaning between teeth.
  • Guide the floss between your teeth using a gentle rubbing motion. Never snap the floss into the gums.
  • When the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a C shape against one tooth. Gently slide it into the space between the gum and the tooth.

Cleaning Your Tongue:

  • When you’re using a toothbrush, put a little bit of toothpaste on your toothbrush and brush your tongue in circular motions. Clean as much of the tongue as you can without gagging and rinse your mouth.
  • If you’re using floss, take a piece of floss and wrap the ends around each finger. Then gently use the middle to scrape and clean your tongue. Finish by rinsing your mouth.
  • While you’re using a tongue scrapper, take both ends of the scrapper in each hand and use the middle to gently scrape and clean your tongue. Rinse your mouth when you’re done.

Avoid Tobacco:

Smoking can cause many serious problems for teeth and oral structures. The problem can be further exacerbated when proper health care is not followed. Among the most common oral problems, smokers are at an increased risk for gum disease.

Smokers are four times more likely of developing this problem than non-smokers.

Gum disease, or periodontal disease as it is clinically known, occurs when a buildup of plaque targets the tissue that makes up the gums, alveolar bone (where teeth are embedded), periodontal ligament (supporting the root of the tooth), and cementum (surface connecting the tooth to the alveolar bone).

Limit sugary and acidic foods:

Ultimately, sugar converts into acid in the mouth, which can then erode the enamel of your teeth. These acids are what lead to cavities. Acidic fruits, teas, and coffee can also wear down tooth enamel. While you don’t necessarily have to avoid such foods altogether, it doesn’t hurt to be mindful.

Instead of starchy foods, Bloomfield Dental Center recommend eating plenty of fiber-rich fruits and vegetables as well as dairy products without added sugar.
